Over the past ten years, Soundwalk Collective has won international recognition for their work of abstracting and re-composing narrative sound pieces through fragments of reality, and by forging evocative journeys in sound that are exhibited in the form of sound installation and performance. This Anniversary Series will showcase selected works that have both defined and defied the soundscape genre.

Soundwalk Collective is currently preparing the sound installation of MEDEA, for Lille Fantastic 2012, October 5-14.

The artwork, consisting of 8 Nagra tape machines, tape loops & video, will be exhibited inside a peniche in the centre of Lille.
It will open for private view and Press on October 5th; two performances will take place on October 7th.

REVISITING CROSSING THE LINE

The French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF)’s Crossing the Line festival kicks off this Friday.  Last year, Soundwalk Collective produced five audio pieces set on Manhattan’s Museum Mile, praised by The New York Times as “the closest to an out-of-body experience”.  Each walk featured specially commissioned texts by New York-based authors Teju Cole, John Giorno and French writers Olivier Cadiot, Philippe Claudel, and Camille Laurens.

In their visions, ayahuasca shamans say they see the essences that animate living beings, the first property of which is to emit melodies. These essences are considered powerful beings, and ayahuasqueros learn their melodies by singing along. Singing like powerful beings, they learn to see like them, and this gives them knowledge. The melodies that shamans bring back from their visions are called “icaros”; they help navigate the space of ayahuasca consciousness, and can also serve as lifelines when overwhelmed by visions. Grab onto the icaros: these songs are made of knowledge.

Soundwalk Collective is collaborating with Berghain, by recording the sounds of the architectural structure of the club shaking in response to the music.

By sending frequency sweeps to the sound system, at a volume between 98dB SPL and 108 dBSPL, each interior surface of the building reacted by filtering the sound and producing newharmonics, vibrations and textures, that are normally unheard by the human ear.

In 2012 SOUNDWALK COLLECTIVE is collaborating with Berghain, by recording the sounds of the architectural structure of the club shaking in response to the music.

The Collective used a series of custom made contact sensors placed upon a vibrating area of the building to capture the resonances of the architecture, without the direct sound.

Each material that constitutes the structure of the building: the glass windows, the metal pipes, the handrails, the metal staircases, the air ducts, the electrical power rooms, the glass bricks, the empty water tanks, the concrete walls, the water pipes; would absorb the sound frequencies and tones in its own unique way, producing in each turn a new sound that often contained a melodic element, allowing the building itself to be played as a musical instrument.

What came out of these recordings is an internal pulse, the sensation of a beat experienced as a seismograph, as well as an internal sonic harmony that is proper to the Berghain building itself.
