SOUNDWALK IN LE NOUVEL OBS’ LIFESTYLE BLOG

Image 1 SOUNDWALK IN LE NOUVEL OBS LIFESTYLE BLOG This thursday, Camille Kiejman, editor of Le Nouvel Observateur‘s fashion and lifestyle blog “En mode Libre” talks about one of her “coup de coeur” of the year, namely the soundwalks. After a quick description of the origins and concept of Soundwalk, she reviews the different tours that are available in Paris : Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Le Marais, Le Palais Royal, Belleville, Pigalle. Having tried out all the Parisian Soundwalks herself, she offers an authentic overview of her impressions and gives out her own recommandations about the tours.

“Soundwalk is a really unique experience, a way of looking at the city and travelling in just one hour, but also a way to learn things and get away from everything. My advice : do it together with someone else, it gives the impression to be plugged into a secret frequency and to escape from the nervous spin of the everyday city life.”

REMEMBRANCE 09.11.09

“On the 8th anniversary of  New York City’s  Twin Towers collapsing, I downloaded the Ground Zero Sonic Memorial Soundwalk, offered for free during 09.11.09, and headed to the World Trade Center to pay my respects.

As soon as I got off the E train, I was greeted by a pair of seemingly omniscient eyes in the wall of the subway stairwell.  What did those eyes see on this day eight years ago…?  I emerged out of the subway at the audio tour’s starting point – St. Paul’s Chapel.

As I walked around Manhattan’s oldest public building in continuous use, I could sense the past and present were entangled in this neighborhood.  Amidst the tall skyscrapers, the remnants of old New Amsterdam were evident – the streets were curvy and the blocks irregular, designed to fit old Dutch farmstead.  Indeed, the air was thick with history.  As I walked to the cemetery behind the church I discovered hundreds of people gathered around the WTC memorial, in the rain and cold, some crying, some mourning silently.

Next, narrator Paul Auster guided me across Church St. and onto Liberty St.  Passing the FDNY Engine and Ladder Co. 10, I saw FDNY firemen saluting their lost comrades.  Then just a few steps down the street, the intersecting alley was lined up with flowers, words, pictures, and people paying respect. People of all races, from all across the country, the world, gathered in this single alleyway to remember, mourn, and celebrate… It was radiantly beautiful I couldn’t help but to let my eyes flood.

I had to pause my iPod.  I thought of just going home and calling it a day.  I had lost my umbrella somewhere earlier on the walk, my feet were soaking wet from the puddles, it was abnormally freezing, and I was too emotionally wrought up.  But…I pressed ‘Play’ and continued to walk, following Paul’s voice and footsteps into the World Financial Center.

As I navigated through the maze of the World Financial Center, I saw the WTC site from a completely different angle.  I could peer into the the ongoing construction, and realized that the out of the ashes there was a new foundation being built. Struck by this revelation, I found myself exiting the maze and arriving at the Winter Garden.  It is an amazing open space, overlooking the Hudson River, where people gather for coffee, lunch, or free concerts.  Slightly uplifted by the lively atmosphere, I went outside to the water.

Upon Paul’s suggestion, I sat on a bench, furthest away from the Winter Garden, at the edge of the water.  In the distance, I saw my city’s first lady – the Statue of Liberty.  She was covered in a veil of mist and rain, but she was standing and perhaps remembering the smoke filling the sky of the city on this day eight years ago.” – Brian Hirono (New York)

Forever synonymous with courage, solidarity and resilience, Ground Zero is the nickname for the area formerly occupied by the Twin Towers. Voicemail messages, interviews, eyewitness accounts, live music, audio artifacts… this intense, not-to-be-missed memorial tour will take you through the lobby’s revolving doors to the piano bar at Windows on the World to St. Paul’s Chapel.

This Soundwalk is narrated by Paul Auster, novelist, screenwriter, director, poet, New Yorker, best selling writer of eleven novels including The Book of Illusions and The New York Trilogy; the films Smoke and Blue in the Face; and host of NPR’s National Story Project. In the aftermath of September 11, 2001, Auster added his distinct and original voice to NPR’s Peabody Award winning Sonic Memorial Project, a nationwide collaboration that came together to chronicle and commemorate the life and history of the World Trade Towers.

AUSTER AT GRANTA’S BEA

Paul Auster gave a short reading of an excerpt from his new book, Invisible, last week at The New School at an evening hosted by Granta. The evening was punctuated by an odd occurrence in which a woman from the audience asked him whether it had been his idea to turn his 1999 novella, Timbuktu, into a children’s book. Auster and his editor, also in the audience were dumbfounded, having no knowledge of a children’s book version of Timbuktu. The mystery was shortly resolved however when it came to light that a German packaging/publishing company named Minedition had approached Auster about a children’s book version some time ago. The company’s server had crashed, erasing all records of their previous communication on the illustrations and abridgments.

Auster was also interviewed by the Financial Times this week in their series, Short Talk. Read the interview here. Auster first collaborated with Soundwalk in the creating the Ground Zero soundwalk in commemoration of the September 11th tragedy. You can download the Ground Zero Soundwalk and find out more about it here.
