SOUNDWALK IN LE NOUVEL OBS’ LIFESTYLE BLOG

Image 1 SOUNDWALK IN LE NOUVEL OBS LIFESTYLE BLOG This thursday, Camille Kiejman, editor of Le Nouvel Observateur‘s fashion and lifestyle blog “En mode Libre” talks about one of her “coup de coeur” of the year, namely the soundwalks. After a quick description of the origins and concept of Soundwalk, she reviews the different tours that are available in Paris : Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Le Marais, Le Palais Royal, Belleville, Pigalle. Having tried out all the Parisian Soundwalks herself, she offers an authentic overview of her impressions and gives out her own recommandations about the tours.

“Soundwalk is a really unique experience, a way of looking at the city and travelling in just one hour, but also a way to learn things and get away from everything. My advice : do it together with someone else, it gives the impression to be plugged into a secret frequency and to escape from the nervous spin of the everyday city life.”

MY FIRST SOUNDWALK RENDEZ-VOUS

As one of the most famous places in Paris, the area of Saint Germain des Prés has progressively become a symbol of the city itself in the eyes of many. As a true Parisian, born and raised in the city, I certainly did not expect to discover anything new about the classic Saint Germain des Prés quartier when I started to stroll around the area of Café de Flore. It did not take long for me to realise that I was going onboard something special. As I wandered around the neighbourhood, I was accompanied by the sensual and elegant voice of French actress Virgine Ledoyen. While I walked, she offered me the chance to seize the beauty and the mystery that inhabits Saint Germain des Prés, and to capture its extraordinary intellectual heritage, which has come to represent the very essence of France’s cultural exception. Far from all the clichés that usually surround this part of Paris, this warm afternoon of June will remain in my memory as the day when I finally discovered the intriguing and passionate essence of Parisian history and lifestyle: the myth that is Saint Germain des Prés.

NOT YOUR AVERAGE CLASSROOM: STUDY ABROAD STUDENTS EXPERIENCE PARIS WITH SOUNDWALK

classblog NOT YOUR AVERAGE CLASSROOM: STUDY ABROAD STUDENTS EXPERIENCE PARIS WITH SOUNDWALK

Marie Lechantre, a French instructor in the CEA global study abroad program, recently accompanied her students on a Soundwalk tour of Saint Germain des Prés in Paris.  We have put together a collection of their comments and thank both Marie and her class for their interest in Soundwalk!

“Je pense que le Soundwalk est une idée parfaite pour les étudiants qui étudient dans un autre pays, comme nous le faisons maintenant, et c’est parfait pour avoir des informations sur un quartier spécifique.” -Andrew Gaydos, 21, Georgia

“Often times it is easy to get bored in a class. Students get into a rut and have a hard time breaking the cycle of constant lectures and homework. It was incredibly refreshing to step outside of the norm and do something that not only helped me learn more about Paris but experience it first hand. I’m glad that I was provided the opportunity to take part in something that I otherwise would have been unaware of. It helped give me a new perspective on Parisian life and just how much history is present in every little part, the known and especially the unknown.” -Cassie Weinman

“Le concept est toujours original! Il y a beaucoup, beaucoup d’histoires sur beaucoup d’endroits dans la ville de Paris, et le Soundwalk est bien documenté. Maintenant, je veux essayer le Soundwalk dans ma ville, New York, quand j’y retournerai, parce que je suis sûre qu’il y a beaucoup de choses que je ne sais pas.” -Amanda Fox, 20, New York

“I think it’s a great learning tool, especially for students who hate being in a classroom every day. There is a lot of history that can be learned. I also enjoyed how there was a complete narrative, with real characters. It wasn’t just historical facts about Paris being pounded into our minds, but rather it was a well thought out, scripted narrative which was then accompanied by a lot of important history. It makes it much more interesting and it’s easier to keep one’s attention when such aspects are applied.” -Christopher DeMichel, 21, Ohio

“J’espère utiliser Soundwalk pour plus de villes. Je suis très contente de mon expérience de Soundwalk, c’est une bonne chose à faire pour apprendre une autre langue et une autre culture en même temps. Si je n’avais pas écouté le Soundwalk, je ne saurais pas tout ce que je sais maintenant.” -Sara Sciabbarrasi, 20, New Jersey

“I enjoyed the Soundwalk because it was a good way to get out of the classroom and learn some history about a very interesting part of Paris. The narration was good because it was more of a story rather than a woman just saying facts that would probably be forgotten.” -Courtney Lind, 21, Oregon

“JE SUIS VIRGINIE LEDOYEN A SAINT GERMAIN DES PRES”

vertcerise border JE SUIS VIRGINIE LEDOYEN A SAINT GERMAIN DES PRES

A shout out to Paris blog Vert cerise… et bleu petit pois? (“Green cherry… and blue pea?”), available in French and “(bad) English”, and its author Laetitia who published a post about our Soundwalk of Saint Germain des Prés narrated by Virginie Ledoyen.

Laetitia tells about Saint Germain des Prés Soundwalk in a post entitled Je suis Virginie Ledoyen à Saint Germain des Prés, a pun on verbs “follow” and “be” which write the same in the first person (“je suis”) : “I follow Virginie Ledoyen in Saint Germain des Prés” and “I am Virginie Ledoyen in Saint Germain des Prés” are the same in French!

Laetitia posted some dynamite images of Saint Germain des Prés and wrote about her experience as a Soundwalker:

“Place de Furstenberg, rue de Buci, rue Christine, rue de Seine, c’était les mêmes rues, les mêmes paysages que d’habitude mais différents. Là, il  y avait une ambiance, une atmosphère, une histoire, une aventure à chaque coin de rue. C’était un peu comme au cinéma.”

Place de Furstenberg, rue de Buci, rue Christine, rue de Seine, these were the same streets, the same urban landscapes as usual, but different this time. There was a mood, an atmosphere, a story, an adventure at every street corner. I felt a bit like in a movie.

“La balade est finie. Virginie me quitte en chanson avant de m’abandonner. Je me retrouve seule au milieu de l’école. J’enlève mes écouteurs. Ca fait une heure qu’on se balade elle et moi. C’est à la fois beaucoup, mais surtout trop peu. Je suis conquise, j’en veux encore. Un bel inconnu passe. Je décide de le suivre.”

“The walk is finished. Virginie leaves me with a song. I find myself standing alone in a schoolyard. I put my earphones off. We have been walking together for one hour. That is a lot, but it feels too short. I am seduced and I want more. A beautiful stranger passes by me. I decide to follow him.”
